Rider Spotlight: Dan and Chandel

Dan and Chandel have been riding Harley-Davidson’s for over 20 years. They enjoy the freedom of the road and the time they get to spend as a couple. Every time they hop on their bikes, it feels like a mini-vacation to them, no matter how long the ride is. They can’t always get away for days because of family and kids, so they enjoy riding together. They have made amazing friendships on the road, whether it be other bikers or just people they met while traveling on their bikes being a riding couple. Chandel explains that “there is nothing that can match and replace those friendships.” They have even had nonriders come up and strike up conversations with them while taking trips on their bikes.

Dan and Chandel’s favorite trip on their bikes was a five-to-six-day trip to St. Louis and Louisville, Kentucky back in 2019 around the Fourth of July. They traveled with their close friends, Kevin and Renee. They enjoyed seeing the fireworks under the Arch in St. Louis. Dan and Chandel also hit some logging roads in town, which made it a little difficult to get around, but both agreed that the views were beautiful.

They then traveled east to Louisville and experienced some extremely hot weather reaching temperatures as high as 108 degrees and 117 with the heat index. Dan and Chandel both agreed that seeing the Caverns was one of their favorite moments, especially because they were 55ft underground and that cooled them off. Their next stop was downtown Louisville where the roads are closed off. Dan is also a big baseball fan and got to take a tour at Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum (Hillerich & Bradsby Co), and they did a Jim Beam Tour. Dan and Chandel didn’t get to do everything they wanted on the trip, but both said it will lead to future rides down the road.

Dan and Chandel hope one day to venture on their favorite vacation. They want to ride up the tail of the dragon, which is a mountain pass along the North Carolina and Tennessee state line. The route borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is nearby the Little Tennessee River. Chandel would also like to get out to North and South Dakota. She would like to see things like Mount Rushmore, Needle’s Highway, and other tourist attractions. Dan has already been out to the Dakota’s, so he would like to travel out to Colorado with Chandel, specifically Mile High City.

Chandel and Dan both got into Motorcycling starting off on Street Bikes. They both loved anything with speed, including dirt bikes, snowmobiles, four-wheelers, and three-wheelers, and started their adventures in high school.

They both eventually “graduated into Harley’s” as they desired more comfort as they grew older. Dan started riding Harley-Davidson bikes in 2000 when he started working down at the Harley-Davidson Factory in Milwaukee. Chandel had a little bit of head start and started riding H-D’s in the mid-90s. Her first was a Sporty but had to take a break to raise her kids. With a lot of hard work and determination, she then got back into riding in 2003.

Dan and Chandel have had their fair share of bikes over the years. Chandel’s favorite bike was her 2011 CVO Softail Convertible, and Dan’s was his 2018 Gunship Gray CVO Road Glide. Both of them like the CVO models since they are already customized from the factory.

Back in 2012, Chandel started riding bigger touring models. She loves the stereo, fairing, additional protection from the lowers, and the handling of the Ultra Limited. She still struggles at times with backing up and parking but joked that the “park job is usually good enough.” She says that shouldn’t stop other females from riding bigger touring models. Once you get over the initial stereotype that they are big and heavy, they are actually pretty easy to ride! Chandel gets the occasional strange looks from men because they think it’s her husband’s bike. Fortunately, she says women on bigger bikes are becoming more accepted in the riding community.

She encourages more females to ride touring models because she says handling is easy once you get over the stereotype. Chandel has ridden Dan’s Ultra Limited and emphasized how comfy it was. She says every female should at least try riding one.

Chandel and Dan have a strong appreciation for Open Road H-D and have been purchasing bikes from the dealership since 2007. They enjoy the sense of family and that everyone is so friendly. Dan and Chandel both agree that "There is never negativity when we walk through the door, and everyone is always happy to see us!"
